The 220S was Mercedes’ flagship of the era. A longish luxury land yacht, the ‘S’ was fitted with a thirsty 6-cylinder gasoline engine that provided storied performance for such a large automobile. It’s shorter, more frugal sister the 180D/190D heaved a weighty and underpowered 4-banger, more renowned for longevity that just about anything else. One winning attribute was its ability to sip all manner of biodiesel/waste vegetable oil blends.

Now on Ebay, this stock diesel HJ45 pickup from South America would make a great bike hauler. The 6-cylinder is notoriously durable and torquey in the rough stuff. I presume there’s a 5-speed as well, which means it’ll do nicely on the highway. Let’s not forget…it’s a rare left-hand drive. There’s no reserve and it just hit $14,000.

10.14.08 UPDATE: Winning bid - $16,500. Almost, but not quite a steal.
